Why the muse matters It's Really About Educational Change Intrinsic Motivation--"In reality, people generate intrinsic motivation; it is not somehow built into topics or tasks. When we are intrinsically motivated we study or do something not for its own sake, but for our sake--because doing so provides us with pleasure or satisfaction" (Brophy). Extrinsic Motivation--"Extrinsic incentives are sometimes necessary for attaining the level of fluency that will allow novices to be motivated by the experience of success" (Hickey and Zuiker). Focus Question: As the three Rs become Reform, Reform, and Reform, we need to stand up for the muse's motivation, translating the Rs into "Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships." |
