Though we are talking about Hamlet now...after reading Watchmen I was upset to notice that there was a lack of...well an actual void of superheroes that were of any type of color. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, why you think this is so. Its interesting to look at all of the comics and notice that there is a lack of race across the board. If there is any heroes of color, they are never one of prominence. Just something to think about. Discuss.

I have noticed this too, and I am not sure why it might be the case...I don't know when many of the comics started appearing, but I am sure some of it has to relate to the lack of representation of people of color that exists throughout society. Most of the representations that have been popularized are stereotypical images of people of color, such as Zip Coon or the Mammy figure. Especially before the time of the civil rights movement, to create a black superhero would have been to show a person of color in a position of power and strength, and many people were probably threatened by this idea.
But Watchmen was published in the 1980's, so I am not sure why Moore did not include any non-white superheroes. I mean, he included a black psychologist and the kid on the street reading the comic book was black, so it is not like he didn't have any color in his novel at all. I guess this just shows that the issue of race is still something to consider and we have not fully shed many of the stereotypes and ideas we hold about the roles people play in society.

I think what you said about the lack of race is so interesting! Honestly, I hadn't exactly thought about it before, but reading your post it is quite obvious that there is no variety of race in Watchmen! I do wonder if it has something to do with the timing though, because although the book was written in the 80s, it is supposed to be taking place in the 40s and 60s. I think that either a) it didn't occur to the authors to include any diversity, or b) they thought it didn't fit as well into the time frame they were writing about.
