While reading Watchmen, I couldn't help but think about the pessimistic way the graphic novel approaches the future of our country. What happened to the American Dream? I wrote this up as I was thinking about the topic. Sorry if it's a bit all over the place, it's just how I came to terms with the subject in my mind.
We’re living in a time of war, genocide, poverty, and terrorism. War on drugs, war on terror, war in Iraq. Cancer, HIV – AIDS, and other illnesses are plaguing our people and killing off our youth. Overpopulation, over stipulation, and economic recession are problems that are hard to miss when you skim the newspaper or flip on the TV. Are you warm? Don’t worry; it’s just the sun you’re feeling thru the hole we’ve made in the ozone.
Welcome to America. Yea, I know The Statue of Liberty promised to take care of all the tired and poor huddled masses, but this is what she has for you today. Take it or leave it. What about the American Dream, you say? Oh well according to Hunter S. Thompson that “burned down about three years ago”.

It’s that dream of a better quality of life that brought our great grandparents to Ellis Island from all other the world. It’s that attitude that provoked our grandparents to move out west and establish roots. It’s that fighting spirit that inspired our parents to actively protest Vietnam and fight “the man” through music and riots and boycotts. It’s the American Dream. Doesn’t it still exist for me?
There was peace and love generation who smoked weed and danced naked, the baby boomers who were solely concerned with getting a good job, becoming millionaires, and shunning the public arena, and now there’s us: a generation of Sisyphuses. Just like that Greek king who was punished by the Gods to push a large boulder up a hill only to watch it roll down again, my generation has been stuck with the daunting and seemingly impossible task of fixing the problems of the past while still lessening the problems of the future. Global warming. The escalating arms race. The war. The environment, Education. Immigration. As the days go by, our list gets longer and our time gets shorter. No one and nothing seems to be on our side. We’re tired, we feel useless, and the only choice seems to be to give up.
Our lack of current political leadership has hindered us from being able to see any option other than surrendering to the powers that be. In an issue over a year ago, the editors of Rolling Stone beckoned Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural speech during the depths of the Depression. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified, terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” Although we aren’t in a Depression, we’re living in a repressed age and Roosevelt’s words carry as much weight then as they do now. We’re not only in fear – we’re scared shitless. Scared of Osama, scared of extinction, and scared of the death of the American Dream. Our fear has paralyzed us, made us inactive, and forced us to take the easier two steps backwards instead of the very much needed, but difficult, one step forward.
Don’t try and solve every problem at once. That’s when you start the feel the oxygen leave your body as you begin to go under water. Speaking out about the many problems facing the world, Paul McCartney said in an interview, “Some people say to me, ‘There are so many issues, we don’t know which ones to support’ Don’t freak out – just choose one that appeals to you and get on with it. They all connect…Right now we’ve got molehills. And that’s OK. But we need them to grow into mountains.” Despite recent events, it’s innately American to be optimistic. Optimistic that we’ve got what it takes to turn the already established tiny molehills into mountains that will allow us to start checking things off our ever-increasing list and get back on the proverbial track.
We have to start advancing and the American Dream will follow. Not the dream of those that came before us, but our dream. In Watchmen, the seemingly cynical Rorscach gave up on the world because he couldn't help but see the dark side of it and couldn't help but give up on making it any better. Let's not take that approach.
After many years of watching that boulder roll down the hill, our generation is chock full of grit and is ready to finally keep that rock where it belongs. It’s time to bear down, get things done, and fight. And that time starts now.

Interestingly enough, my mom and I were discussing our generation a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned that she had just read an article about how civic minded we are. As I began to think about this, I realized it is pretty true. I know that in high school to be a part of NHS we had to complete a certain number of volunteer hours and most people my age volunteer either regularly or at least several times a year. While there is a difference between obligatory volunteer hours and actual volunteer hours, I think our generation has passion for the latter. While we may get caught up in trying to choose which problem to fight for or try to fix, we are at least out there trying to give something of ourselves to someone else.
I think Rorschach, like us was trying to right the wrongs of the world.
