Huey Freeman

The fictional character that I created a playlist for is Huey Freeman from the cartoon called The Boondocks. Huey is a 10 year old kid who is into martial arts, meditation, and social justice. As a young activist within his community, he does not have any insecurity about exposing social injustice and inequality to the masses. Here is a playlist that describes this character.

I chose Dead Prez "Propaganda" because Huey is a firm believer that the government in our country does not care about the common man. The song illustrates that very same mind frame. As you can see below, these lyrics tap lightly into the mind set that the government covers up alot of their wrong doing with Propaganda.

“You can’t fool all the people all of the time
But if you fool the right ones, the rest will fall behind
Tell me who’s got control of your mind
Is it the news or the movies you taking your girl to
Know what I’m saying cause uncle sam got a plan
If you examine what they telling us then you’ll understand
What they planting in the seeds of the next generation
Feeding our children Miseducation”

Talib kweli – beautiful struggle - This song illustrates the philosophy popularly recognized as the "Revolution will not be televised." This philosophy speaks in terms of the oppressed mind freeing itself from the complacent state of mind that it is currently in. Huey Freeman represents the element within the oppressed community that encourages this thought. With his outspokeness, he uses his opportunities to announce to those around him certain "truths" that many have come to believe in. These lyrics below speak of it being the oppressed destiny to free oneself. You can try to change that destiny but I will laugh because inevitably that change will come.

"The revolution's here
No one can lead you off your path
You'll try to change the world
So please excuse me while I laugh
No one can change your ways
No one can lead you off your path
You'll try to change the world
So please excuse me while I laugh"

Outkast get up get out - Huey is the type of character that encourages everyone within his community to take responsibility for their own actions. He encourgaes everyone becoming self reliable and not depending on "The Man" for hand outs. In this song, by Outkast, it strongly promotes one becoming independant and achieving their own individual goals.

"you need to git up, git out and git somethin
Don't let the days of your life pass by
You need to git up, git out and git somethin
Don't spend all your time tryin to get high
You need git up, git out and git somethin
How will you make it if you never even try
You need to git up, git out and git somethin
Cuz you and I got to do for you and I"

The corner by Common This song speaks of the actual conditions that Huey experiences growing up within his community. The lyrics, "I wish I could give you this feeling, I wish I could give you this feeling. On the corner, n...as dying, killing, robbing just to make a living," demonstrates some of the conditions that Huey has or may have experienced growing up.

Nas - "If I Ruled the World" - Huey also feels that he is naturally born to free his people from the mental oppression that they are currently in. In the song, "If I Ruled the World," the artist Nas speaks of his people being free and how peaceful it would be to not be bombarded with an oppressive system surrounding black people.
If I ruled the world
"If I ruled the World, I'd Free all my sons
I love them, love them baby
Black Diamonds and Pearls
If I ruled the World

And then we'll walk right up to the sun
Hand in Hand
We'll walk right up to the sun
We won't land"

"The Sound of the Police" by Krs-One This artist speaks the words that many within the African American community feel. Police, many believe, are not within our community to protect and serve. Many feel that they do more harrassing and brutalizing than the latter. Huey is a firm believer in this philosopy and speaks constantly of this.
"Whoop Whoop
That's the Sound of the Police
Whoop Whoop
That's the Sound of the Beast
Whoop Whoop
That's the Sound of the Police
Whoop Whoop
That's the Sound of the Beast"

Public Enemy - "911 is a Joke" is another popular song that illustrates the feelings that the character Huey Freeman has toward authority.
