Midterm Portfolio

Well here is my portfolio (finally...apologies for the delay!)

Updated Dorian Gray Playlist

My playlist outlines the development of the title character in Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was written in 1890.

The Second Coming Collage

"The Second Coming" by W.B. Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Daisy Miller Collage

Well I'm not sure if I uploaded these correctly, I guess I will find out once I submit this. By the way, MAN was getting used to Gimp difficult!

Pete Doherty Podcasty

Pete Doherty's song lyrics can be considered literary.

Dorian Gray Playlist

I decided to do my playlist on Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray." This is my first version of the playlist with the most pertinent lyrics included:

1. "Narcissist"- The Libertines
"We're living in a looking glass/ As the beauty of life goes by/ You're going to be so oh/ You're going to grow so old/ Your skin so cold

We’re just narcissists/ Well wouldn't it be nice to be Dorian Gray?/ Just for a day/ They're just narcissists/ Oh, what's so great to be Dorian Gray/ Every day?"

[as an introduction to Dorian's primary characteristic, narcissism]

2. "Beg, Steal, or Borrow"- Babyshambles
"Why should I wait until tomorrow?/ I've already been/ I've already seen/ All the sorrow that's in store

But if I beg steal or borrow/ Just to hold on tighter/ To all the sorrow/ Tries to chaw/ If I change my tune/ Maybe well I won't be bound to doom/ Well I won't be bound to doom"

[Dorian's intial rationalization for pursuing a life of hedonism, etc]

3. "Spike The Senses"- Of Montreal
"Every second of every day I let me fancy play/ And if the feeling strikes me/ I deliquesce into the sky without waving goodbye/ While contemplating a fractured pale cathedral wall
death can't touch me at all/ Let its rapacious fingers with venomous stingers try/ I'd like to see it try, try to find a way to spike the senses/ till everything goes white

Climbing climbing climbing never falling/ If it was up to me I'd freak the clouds/ let them fall and grip to the sea/ I think the chemicals have done/some evil thing to me"

[Dorian explores opium in a search for mental and physical pleasure]

4. "Black Hearted Boy"- The Fiery Furnaces
"Darling black hearted boy,/ I went down to wash my robe in the river;/ I thought of you and started to shake and to shiver./ Leaning there on the rocks./ I see myself slip down and float/ 'til the brackish warm current stops up my throat.

You swore you swore you'd never leave/ you swore you swore you'd never leave and now you're gone and
now I'm-"

[Dorian breaks the actress Sibyl Vane's heart]

5. "Isolation"- Joy Division
"Surrendered to self preservation/ From others who care for themselves/ A blindness that touches perfection/ But hurts just like anything else
Isolation, Isolation, Isolation

Mother, I tried, please believe me/ I'm doing the best that I can/ I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through/ I'm ashamed of the person I am
Isolation, Isolation, Isolation

But if you could just see the beauty/These things I could never describe/These pleasures a wayward distraction/This is my one broken prize"

[Dorian finds himself increasingly alone because of alienating and harming former friends. His only (but most important ideal) consolation is his beauty and youth]
