Media Book Materials

Below are the materials that I contributed to our media book regarding the fallen woman character. Our main goal was to show that these characters are transferable across all lines of media. In my particular section, I included several examples of fallen woman characters as represented in literature, film, and music. The fallen woman along with the other characters highlighted in our media book are ever present staples in the arts and have had a lasting impact on all forms of expression.

Literature: The Scarlet Letter

Example of literature through Dance

Film: Black Snake Moan

Movie Trailer

Music: She Talks to Angels

FINAL PORTFOLIO

ENGL 366 FINAL PORTFOLIO

Portfolio

When I signed up for this class I had no idea what it would consist of, I only chose it based on its title “English and the other arts,” which I hoped would mean the course would be interdisciplinary. At my home university my degree subject (English) had to be specified before even starting university; the syllabus is quite rigid and my choices fairly limited, so with an abundance of English courses to pick from at UNC, I wanted to avoid the typical survey and genre classes in hope of finding something a bit less typical. Engl 366 fulfilled that role.

Revised video

The original version of this video was lost when my computer crashed a few weeks ago, so here's the attempt to redo it! I definitely had some trouble with the software, and converting it to the correct file, but I finally have it right! The first video file is the first revision, while the second file is the final revision!

FINAL PORTFOLIO

I was initially excited to take this class because I have always been interested in mixing different mediums of art, and I think that throughout this semester, this class has allowed and encouraged the integration of these things. When you think about it, there really shouldn't be such a distinction between literature and the "arts". Literature is a part of the arts, and I know that while people in general tend to think of the arts as a more visual and aural category and separate the written word from it, in reality, it's not separate. And I think most people understand that, because while we use language everyday to communicate, whether it be in print, out loud, or in this case online, there is still an artistic interpretation of language and the written word, and that interpretation of it is what we call literature. But as in literature, as in all of the arts, there is no real definitive marker that everyone can agree on that constitutes a piece of art. This class asks this question not only of different works of literature, but of creativity in general. Can we take something that others had technically created and make it our own. The answer is yes, because while art can involve a great deal of skill to create, its main component is still interpretation. So "make it new!, as Ezra Pound would say, and that doesn't necessarily mean to make something that has never been done before, but instead to take what already exists(because that is all we have) and make that into something new.

FINAL

So, if this class was nothing like I expected it half a semester in, all the way through not much has changed. I was so interested in seeing the kind of "behind the scenes" aspect of making these, and definitely looking at literature in a way so far removed from how I am used to doing so.
As I said in the midterm thing, the technology kicked my butt. There's no getting around it. I can't count the times I've sat on my couch cursing Sophie-slash-Gimp-Audacity. I'm not a very tech-savvy person, and I'm also not a very patient person, so when those powers combined it sometimes meant bad news for the state of my podcast/collage.
And after everything, I have to say I don't think my calling is going to be in Sophie-book creating, or even in Gimp artisticness. I did the best I could with the programs though, and I think the content I created and the way I was able to wrap my head around the subject really will be what benefits me in the long run.
So here's to thinking about literature in a new way -- and to deleting Gimp and Sophie off my computer. Immediately. :)

REVISIONS:

Final Portfolio

When I signed up for this class, I was unsure what it would be like but was intrigued by the idea of pulling together literature and art, which have been interests of mine since an early age. The first day of class, with its seminar-style working environment and discussion-oriented format, I was assured that the course was right up my alley. During the semester, I have been challenged and stretched both in my thinking as well as my technological and organizational abilities. Though I have enjoyed the creative projects we have worked on and particularly like the flexibility in ideas they allow for, I have been challenged to translate my mental brainstorming and idea-mapping thought processes into a blog format.

Just wanted to let you know that the sources for my video are the last attached file at the end of the Final Portfolio! They have also been added to the end of my Final video.
