A Connection Between the Devil and the Prison Guard?
Submitted by Scott Thompson on Tue, 11/25/2008 - 08:44It kind of seems like a stretch, but I am wondering if there is a connection between the Devil and the prison guard in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? To see what I mean, watch the video below.
There seems to be a strong connection between Tommy's description of the devil and the prison guard in the scene when Everett is finally "caught". I'm not quite sure what to make of this potential connection. At first it seems absurd, but then again maybe there are some subtle connections.
If you view the guard as a discipliner then it is possible that a larger statement is trying to be made about the Devil. This may be compounded when the guard says that they don't have a radio to hear the governor's pardon. That statement may point to a battle between two different powers; however, I would not view the Governor as a symbol for God.
What does everyone else think?

Here are the instructions for submitting the final portfolio of your work:
First, remember the goals of the portfolio. The portfolio serves two main purposes: 1.) to drive continued revision of your projects, and 2.) to promote reflection on what you have learned as a writer and thinker in the class. Be sure to compose reflections about all of the materials that you submit and in your reflections to help readers see these two elements.
You'll also need to revise the cover letter that reflects on the entire body of your work and your progression as a thinker and writer for the class. Remember that portfolios work well at demonstrating learning, growth, effort, and excellence in the final products of your work. Your letter, then, can serve to educate readers of the portfolio about the materials you have collected in terms of these kinds of criteria. This is where you make the case for what you have done in the course and what you have learned from it.

music in "o brother where art thou?"
Submitted by Emily Evans on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 20:49One of the things that stood out most to me in O Brother Where Art Thou?, especially in comparison to No Country For Old Men, was the music, and the important role it played in the story. Several times music was important to the plot- for example, when Everett & co "sing into the can" at the radio station, the appealing sound of the Christian baptismal songs, and when the sirens' song seduces the men out of their car. Singing and music pop up everywhere, and in the end, the Soggy Bottom Boys are what saves the central characters- the town is united by music. It's also interesting that the "bad" character, who challenges the incumbent in a local election, is described as "not a fan of music." Background soundtrack music also seems to be relevant to the story. Is there something more the music is trying to show? Does it represent themes to the movie? What does everyone think?
