Janie Crawford Collage

Daniel Anderson's picture

This is an interesting

This is an interesting composition. I think the work you are doing with mirroring is really strong. I wonder if scaling it up somehow might be called for, since it is a big piece of the message. I also feel like the bits on the right and top are less dynamic. Maybe doing more with fewer might be worth thinking about. Can one or two pieces be given a presence to balance with the left portions--or maybe integrate the text onto that page and do something with the hands. I'm thinking of some kind of counterpoint/parallel component to the strong mirror image.

This could be a movie poster.

This could be a movie poster. Great job

Really Good

I've read Their Eyes Were Watching God and personally enjoyed it and I think this is a really good collage. I'm somewhat confused at why she seems afraid in the picture. She was never really afraid. She was a strong, independent (for the time, REALLY independent) woman. I never found her to be afraid. Perhaps looked down on, but never afraid...sorry. I thought I'd note that. Also, even though you did a great job with the opacity, I still seem to think the middle picture at the top is...oh, I guess it just doesn't fit there for me. I could be wrong... I love the text.

Thanks for the comments on

Thanks for the comments on both collages. I didn't really mean for the picture of Janie to look scared... more like unsure about her life and its direction. Although she is independent, I don't feel that she reached this stage until the end of the story. She seemed very reliant on the men in her life throughout many parts of the book. If you read my reflection then you might better understand the collage.

I read this book junior year

I read this book junior year and I think your collage is a great representation of it. I agree that she had to develop her independence throughout the story and she didn't reach her strongest potential until near the end of the novel. I also love the praying hands and the quote. Overall, great job!

I don't agree with anyone.

I don't agree with anyone. I thought she found her REAL independence after she went off with him. That was her choice. Technically, since it's a story within a story, she really has that independence throughout the entire novel. I tend to disagree with people a lot, though, so please don't take it to mean anything.

I don't really think she

I don't really think she seems confused...I definitely got the sense that she was more unsure. You did a great job!

Yeah.

I've also read Their Eyes Were Watching God. I think that the novel is all about Janie's quest for a secure sense of independence and identity that she definitely did not always have, and I think this collage represents her character very well.
