"The Bet" a short story by Anton Chekhov

This playlist is based on the short story by Anton Chekhov entitled,” The Bet.” Life in prison

The Bet is a rather ridiculous tale set in the late 1800’s which begins with a scholarly debate amongst seemingly well-off members of society about their dispositions towards the morality of capital punishment/ life in prison.. When his preference for life in prison is declared, a young lawyer of only 25 years accepts a bet from a wealthy banker to voluntarily submit himself to solitary confinement in a the banker’s garden lodge in exchange for a payment of 2 million dollars. Of course, in order for the wager to be paid, the young man must remain in the lodge for the entire 15 years without human contact, beyond the delivery service provided to the captive for procuring books, etc at the lawyer’s discretion. When the unique bet is carried out, the young lawyer begins an almost 15 year journey of exile, during which his emotions lead him to endeavor in various studies, thus sculpting the young lawyer’s ideology towards society, money, and many other things. Inevitably time shapes the lawyer into a man without the same greedy regard for money- foiling that which he exuded through taking the bet in the first place-and so the now middle-aged lawyer exits the lodge just moments before his sentence elapsed. The bet is thus spoiled and the once wealthy banker -who frivolously loses much of his fortune during the 15 years- is spared. The following playlist is designed to correlate with the emotional roller coaster experienced by the young man during his stay in the garden lodge.

Playlist Feedback

I like how you've found YouTube clips for all the elements of the playlist. As I read through the introduction, though, I have to admit I got a bit lost in the summary of what takes place. I think if you break that up and detail the story in the various sections of the playlist it will do two things. It will make it easier to take in the plot of the story. It will also allow you to discuss the songs in detail, refering to the lyrics and sounds. I did have a question about the Rocket Man song as well. I get the isolation part, but the literal connections with space flight make me wonder about its placement in a Chekov story. Again, discussing the songs in more detail as you go will help you sort through these connections.
