  • No change since mid-term, very pleased with it now

I've changed this a little bit from when i first posted it, i've drawn more connections from the lyrics and deleted a song to add a new one. I feel like now the songs have more of a connection together, as well as with Dean and his life. I took out "Sexi Plexi" by Jack Johnson and put in "Halfway Home" by Jason Mraz. I realized "Sexi Plexi" didn't exactly have the message i was going for, and "Halfway Home" did.

The popular song "Live Like You Were Dying" my Tim McGraw is taken litterally by a man after his almost religious experience Easter morning in Jerusalem. He decides to litterally live like he was going to die in 6 months, and he tells his very interesting story of the following 6 months.

here it is

Actual Audio
This is the actual audio from the radio show "This American Life" on NPR, the very first edition (i heard it on the 10th year anniversary when they replayed the first show)

This mashup is about how dumb it looks to drink too much. Everyone will agree with me when I say a little alcohol can be ok, but sometimes it gets taken too far.

  • The voicemail project was a lot of fun. Sydney and I created a voicemail for Eustace Conway, the "Last American Man" according to many. We used my voice, with a few effects courtesy of Garageband, and sound effects such as crickets, dogs barking, water, and other forest sounds to give the effect that he was in the middle of the woods recording this. I think it turned out pretty well.

So does anyone remember that discussion we had at the beginning of the year about how lyrics are such a necessary part of songs? Well, i just finished up a Unit in English 101 on popular music, and i've given it a little more thought. I'm still not sure if i've made up my mind completely, but i think that neither argument is right. You need both the lyrics and the song. I wrote an essay on Bob Dylan's song "Like a Rolling Stone", and sure, the lyrics are a HUGE part of the song, because without it he wouldn't be able to show his powerful metaphors, but also, without the music, the oh-so-cheerful organ, the ominous snare drum slap to start the song, the bright but telling guitar solos..

Sydney and I created a voicemail message for Eustace Conway, the man in charge of Turtle Island Preserve. He lives completely off the land and is called the "last american man". Turtle Island preserve is a place for folks to go and learn about how to live off the land and become less dependent on commercial society. Here's our voicemail.

I've decided to create my playlist based on what Dean Moriarty from the book On The Road by Jack Kerouac. Dean is one of the main characters, who in the nicest terms of the word is a Bum. I don't know how many of you have read it, but read it. It changed my life, just as it has changed everyone else's who's read it, and it will change yours.

Dean is a theif, an intelectual, upheld as holy by his beatnik freinds. As Kerouac put it, he is “simply a youth tremendously excited with life."

What kind of a song can describe such a character? I've got 8 here that i think do a pretty good job
