My podcast assignment is based on the sheer fact that everytime I walk around campus, people with iPods seem to have hidden them in their backpacks or other bags. On the other hand, I either hold mine or wear the wrist band. There was a time I was ashamed to admit what I liked in music and it all traces back to the 8th grade. I freely admitted to my classmates that I liked N'Sync, and did I pay for it. Not only did I have a big binder with their picture, I brought the CD to class and played it for my classmates. Nevertheless,it had the effect of a fire drill. Anyway, after a year of torture from my peers as well as my hippie History teacher, I declared to myself that I'd never talk about my favorite music with anybody except close friends.

Now five years later and things have changed including music, but now I am not ashamed anymore to have my iPod showing the name of my favorite songs. Even though N'Sync may be gone, the shadow of my middle school life still lives in my iPod. However, in cool college land where indie music and all that jazz seems to rule, I still have my jitters about talking to people about music.

And from this my project was born, to see if other people still have the feeling that I still get about my music, that shame, that guilt and sometimes anxiety about sharing something so personal with others. I haven't received as much information as I need yet, but I know I will. I do believe I am not the only one who secretly bobs their head in the elevator, sing all the words to Justin Timberlake, or does goofy dances in their dorm room. I now know that it's okay to feel what I felt when I first heard " U Can't Touch This" and my dad did the MC Hammer dance in those parachute pants. Music tells the stories of my life I sometimes forget, always laugh at and will never grow tired of listening to.

music

I used to change my cds according to who was riding in my car. For example, my youth pastor gets in and we listened to Christian music; my boyfriend gets in and we listened to rap; my best friends get in and we listened to girly music. Eventually I decided that in my car we would just listen to MY favorites, and my friends don't necisarily like it all the time, but they deal with it!

Musical Sensitivity

I've been there! I used to never let people touch my music because they would always switch when one of my favorite songs came on. I listen to a little bit of everything, so my genre specific friends tend to give me "the look" when something they don't particularly care for. Now I'll just direct people to certain playlists, so that what they see and hear, is what they want. Other than that, I'm zoning out and jamming all by myself.
