My Video

Mimi Antonecchia's picture

My original intent for the video was to do it on slavery, but after getting about half way through it was not looking as good as I thought it was going to. I decided to change topics and do it on women getting their right to vote. In the video I tried to show the how women came together during this time to acquire the rights they deserved. I really liked doing the video and working with the Premiere program. It gave me a few problems, but the final result was definitely worth it!

I hope you enjoy!

I found all my images through www.yahoo.com and www.google.com and searching their images.

Video Project

This video is not what it could have been if I had put more time into it, but I think it turned out okay. I did have to narrow down what I was talking about because the topic still seemed fairly broad when I was online looking for pictures and images. I still think I got my point across alright and it turned out pretty good considering this is the first movie I have made at all.

Revised Avril Podcast

2:20 minutes (2.14 MB)

Yeah, so I decided to re-record each of my sections where I talked because I talked a little fast when I originally did the first one. So for that, I tried to slow down and speak clearly and loudly so that I could be understood. However, even with that, I still had some popping noises, but when I tried to edit them out, I really couldn't seem to fix them no matter how much I used that tool, so there are still some noises in there that I didn't want. However, I do think it is better then my original one.

Cover Letter
This FYS was not my top choice when I was registering for classes, but it had two things I was fairly interested in, so I decided to take it (that and it was the only one i could get in). However, this class has turned out to be my favorite class of the semester, without a doubt. I have actually enjoyed doing work for this class, as opposed to all of my other classes, where the work is more like actual work. I have really enjoyed learning how to use all of these programs and all of these different things on my computer that I would have never found out how to do otherwise, and probably would have written it off as too hard for me to learn. I have learned that I am not so bad with computers though. I was even wondering what other kinds of classes I could take that would be similar to this and if they had any major that would go along with them. :)

Final Portfolio!

Computers and English has probably been one of my most surprising classes this year. Honestly, I didn't know anything about the class, I was just really interested in taking a freshman seminar. However, now it has quickly become one of my favorite classes, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I have enjoyed the class and the assignments.

Frankly, this class is probably one of the most unique I have ever been in. From the start, it was clear that the most important aspect of the class was really connecting with the material and learning to develop and individual sense of literature and how to study and create it. In doing so, we have always been given the resources and flexibility to learn and explore almost any kind of multimedia imaginable. Instead of being just another rigid homework, lecture, and assignments class, everyday I have class I really feel like I'm going to have the opportunity to be creative and get a grasp on a variety of different material, and it has been quite refreshing.

Revised Sway Collage

Revised Sway Collage

I decided to again listen to what people said and mess with the words, because they did look a little odd just at the top of the image. I was trying to break them up into different pieces, but that didn't look right to me, so I decided to add shadowing (which sort of happened by accident) and I made it smaller and moved it down so that it kind of looked like the couple was saying it. After I moved it there, it just looked right to me, so I decided to stick with it. I also worked on the guy's arm because it was a little messy.

I did the song "Sway" which has been performed many times, my favorite being Michael Buble.

Sway Lyrics
When marimba rhythms start to play
Dance with me, make me sway
Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore
Hold me close, sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze
Bend with me, sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me
Stay with me, sway with me

Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins
Long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now

Revised Guy LeMerle Collage

Revised Guy LeMerle Collage

I decided to listen to some comments and get rid of some of the images because it did look a little crowded when I looked at it again. Also, some of them were not really necessary to the piece as a whole in describing the character's actions and feelings. I added another eye to make the symmetry better, and it would have bugged me if there wasn't another one there. I made the eyes blend in more to the body by hardening each of them. I also added flames to the top right corner just so that each corner had it. I also moved the words because I thought that off center, they didn't look right once I had taken away some of the gratuitous images.

This project has been very fun for me; however, it still had some challenges. I really liked learning how to use Photoplus, even though it was very frustrating at times. It was fun to work with images, which is something I don’t do a lot. I’m so bad with Photoshop, so maybe this will help me out and make me better at it. I like to take pictures, but I have never thought about manipulating them until now, which I am totally going to do.

Dorothy Parker Video

Rachel Shocket's picture

This is my video about Dorothy Parker's poem "Penelope". I wanted to visually represent the feel and tone of her poem, since I think it is a witty commentary on the housewife. I chose this poem because my "assigned challenge" for the second half of the course was to integrate some sort of women studies analysis into one of my projects, and this poem clearly lent itself to the task. I show the poem three times in three different settings to show how over time, society's view of women (and women's views of themselves) have changed.

Final Portfolio

It has been a long road to this final portfolio. As I would assume most freshmen do, I came into this university intimidated but with high expectations for myself and for the curriculum of the school. I knew for sure that I wanted to take a First Year Seminar in my first semester because I had heard so much positive feedback about the program from my “experienced” upperclassman friends. As I was told, taking a seminar would never turn out to be something that I would regret. However, as English has never fully intrigued me, and computers have always mystified my mind, I failed to envision myself taking a seminar entitled English and Computers, much less enjoying it. The first few weeks of the class, however, completely reversed any of my negative preconceived notions of what the class would entail. From the beginning, it became clear that Professor Anderson was the type of instructor that any college student would kill for; not only is he passionate about the subject he teaches, but he actually gives a lick what his students have to say.
